This touching story by a local American journalist discusses the real dangers of thyroid cancer, and why we need to bring more awareness to a very common form of cancer.
Kelsie McMahon shares her memories to create awareness about thyroid cancer.
“I was young, healthy and ready to start my journalism career,” I said.
“As I look back on my college years, I have so many great memories and one life-saving memory.”
“It was the day I walked into my college health center to get a work physical and the nurse felt something strange on my neck.”
“She told me to have my family doctor take a look. So after several appointments and tests, my doctor called and told me the news.”
“I had thyroid cancer.”
“So thyroid cancer is fairly common, probably see 10-20 new cases a year and more female than male…tends to occur in people even in teenage years all the way up to people in their 60’s and 70’s, so it’s something that’s usually picked up by the primary care physician when they find that someone has a lump,” said Dr. Ryan.
“If you’re diagnosed before age 50, almost always those individuals never die from thyroid cancer,” said Dr. Ryan.
“My message…don’t take your health for granted, if you think something is wrong, get checked,” I said.
